President Park Chung-hee

President of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction

inaugural address

1961.07.03

General Zhang Do-ei, who has had much trouble with the revolution over the months since the launch of the National Revolution on May 16, resigned as chairman of the Supreme Council for Reconstruction for personal reasons. During that time, the Supreme Council for Reconstruction, with the absolute confidence and cooperation of the people's imperial throne, achieved its initial goal of the revolutionary task of eradicating corruption and injustice. But ahead of us lies a number of difficulties, including the reconstruction of the national economy and the establishment of social ethics, due to the accumulated evils of the former administration over the past decade.
At this time of year, the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, together with the people of Japan, must put together a resolution on May 16th to settle the old evils as soon as possible, raise the discipline of the nation and the energy of the people, and concentrate its energies on preventing the invasion of communism and building a truly democratic and welfare nation in all economic aspects.
At such a critical time, he, who bears the heavy responsibility of the Chairman of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, will strive to unite the capacity of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction with his passion and patriotism, and will achieve the historical achievement of real democratic reconstruction with active cooperation from the people's throne.
I hope that all of you will fully understand the spirit and dedication of the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, mobilize all your energies and energies to promote our real reconstruction of the Democratic Republic.
There is no way for us to retreat, as we stand on our backs. There is just progress in front of us.
